Gorilla Goma turned 50

This is Goma from the Basel Zoo. She is the first gorilla ever born in a Eurpopean zoo. Last Tuesday she turned 50 years old.
It should be noted that unlike zoo born gorillas today, Goma spent the first years of her life almost entirely with zoo staff. While this made her exceptionally close with humans, it made it difficult for her to enter gorilla society and it took many years for her to find her place with her fellow great apes. Today as a result of gorillas like Goma, zoos go to great lengths to ensure that their animals are comfortable with their own kind.

Pictures by Matt Marriott/Busch Gardens
Busch Gardens welcomed a baby bongo to the park Sept. 13. Bongo are native to the rainforests of Africa. Busch Gardens cares for the endangered Eastern Mountain subspecies of bongo. Their bright chestnut color becomes darker with age, and their body is highlighted with white stripes. The gestation period for this species is 9 to 9 ½ months. Lovebirds ft. two-toed sloth
Sender-inner Dave G. writes: "A friend of mine sent me the link to your website and I have enjoyed looking at many of the extremely cute pictures and videos. I am by no means a professional photographer, but I enjoy animals and like to take pictures also. The two pictures I am sending were made in a Zoo this year and I figured they might be cute enough for your website ;)."
Thanks Dave. Beautiful picture. We hope we are right by naming the animal in the tree a two-toed sloth?!

New baby gorilla at the National Zoo

This is Kibibi the newest baby gorilla at the Smithsonian National Zoo. Kibibi is a Western Lowland gorilla.
On the zoo's site you can read that she is "getting bigger and bolder by the day." Like for example, "that she loves to bang on plastic spools, enclosure walls and other stuff that will make a good sound."
Check out Kibibi pictures at the National Zoo's gallery.

SeaWorld releases endangered turtle hatchlings

Pictures by SeaWorld Orlando
SeaWorld Orlando animal care expert, Jenny Albert, releases endangered loggerhead sea turtle hatchlings off the coast of Juno Beach, Fla. The young sea turtles are completing a 12-day odyssey that began when they were transported to SeaWorld Orlando after rough seas from Hurricane Bill kept them from making their trek from their nest on the beach to the waters off Cape Canaveral.
SeaWorld partnered with the Loggerhead Marinelife Center of Juno Beach for the release.
Discover more about loggerhead sea turtles at SeaWorld.org.
