SeaWorld Orlando cares for endangered Loggerhead Turtles

Pictures by SeaWorld

Aquarists at SeaWorld Orlando are providing round-the-clock care for three endangered loggerhead sea turtle hatchlings this week. Park rangers in Cape Canaveral, FL transported the reptilian refugees to SeaWorld after rough seas caused by Hurricane Bill prevented the week-old trio from trekking from their nest to the waters off the Cape Canaveral National Seashore. Once the seas calm, SeaWorld Orlando’s Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation Team will return the turtles to the wild off the coast of Juno Beach in Jupiter, Florida.

Loggerheads are listed as threatened by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). Every year hatchlings face many “human” obstacles during their journey from their nest on the beach to the shoreline. Artificial lighting, noise and beach activity can confuse causing them to head away from the ocean and toward parking lots and city streets. To discover more about loggerheads, go to www.seaworld.org.

Nia Faye," the Cincinnati Zoo's 7-week-old, female African cheetah cub, is now on exhibit in the Zoo's nursery. She was born at the Zoo's regional cheetah breeding facility in Clermont County on July 2nd, but she had to be moved to the Zoo's Nursery after her mother, Purdy, could not provide adequate care. In an effort to get the cub back up to speed, Nursery staff bottle fed the cub six times each day until she was five weeks old. The cub is now eating meat with the help of the Nursery staff and she currently weighs six pounds.

Best Friends at Busch Gardens

Another remarkable frienship in the animal kingdom...

Busch Gardens Tampa Bay's 65-acre Serengeti Plain is home to herds of giraffe, zebra, rhino, African antelope and many species of birds. Just as they do on Africa's plains, the animals usually hang out with their own species. But recently, zoo keepers at Busch Gardens noticed an unlikely pair. Bea, a three-year-old giraffe, and Wilma, an ostrich, just can't seem to get enough of one another. Best friends? We'll let the pictures speak for themselves.

Ralph the penguin gets a wetsuit

Penguins moult every year, which usually takes between four to six weeks to complete. However, Ralph, a nine year old Humboldt penguin, lost all of his feathers in one day, exposing his pale pink skin to the sun. The wetsuit will protect Ralphs sensitive skin until his new feathers have grown through, which his keepers think will take another two to three weeks.

Tommy the baby opossum

Sender-inner Adriana writes: "I have a photo of a baby "gambá" (opossum in brazilian portuguese) that my friend rescued on the way of our trip.

Its mother had been killed by a car and this baby was in its mom's belly! Because he is a firefighter, my friend knew how to take the baby opossum off.

In this pic, Tommy - the baby gambá (I named it! =]) in a sock as we were trying to give it some milk.

Sorry 'bout my english!

Kisses and Hugz."

Your English is not bad at all Adriana! Hugs and kisses back for you and Tommy.
