Koalas during the heat wave in Australia

Some awesome pictures that Cindy W. has emailed us. More heated and also rescued Australian animals here, here and here.
Australia has had a record heat wave with devastating fires as a result.
Koalas if you don't know are not social and don't come out of trees or down to the suburbs very often. But the main thing is that they don't actually drink water normally at any time. All their food and water source is provided from the eucalyptus leaves that they eat. That's why they sleep about 22 hours of the day because the calories and liquid intake is not enough to keep them awake long enough, but they consume enormous amounts of leaves in that time. So.. the following photos are even more amazing once that fact is known.

Baby Fennec foxes debut at Tokyo Zoo
These Fennec foxes were born in May at a zoo in Tokyo and are being looked after by staff because their mother was unable to take care of them herself. Their big ears aren't actually to help their hearing, the large surface area helps them lose heat.

Newborn baby deer rescue
Okay, we have to admit that the voice-over is a bit boring, but the video is very touching...
Late in the evening a friend knocked on our door with a new born baby deer in her arms, not more than an hour old. She found the mother dead from a car accident, and the baby must have popped out of the mother during the accident. The tiny baby buck laid in his mother's blood on the side of the road. Our friend Angelea cleaned off most of the blood, and her and her mother Sakkara wrapped up the baby in a towel to bring it over to us. Without a mother, the fawn had little chance for survival, but we were determined to see her through the night until we could contact a local woman who is licensed to raise orphaned deer.
Check out Deer in the yard for more videos and pictures.

SeaWorld Orlando welcomes flamingo fluffball

Pictures by Jason Collier/SeaWorld Orlando
Walker, a Caribbean flamingo, explores his habitat at SeaWorld in Orlando. Hatched just four weeks ago, Walker eats plenty of fish, krill, hardboiled egg and cereal and as an adult will feed on a special diet formulated just for flamingos. In fact, the trademark bright pink color of Walker's future feathers is caused by carotenoid pigments that occur naturally in a variety of plant and animal life and are responsible for the red and orange coloring in many birds. SeaWorld's avian experts expect Walker to grow into his adult plumage in about three years. To learn more about Caribbean flamingos, go to SeaWorld.org.

Pig is a supermom...
Ok kids, what is 'wrong' here? ;-)
Visitors at a zoo in Thailand witness the bizarre sights of tiger cubs suckling a sow and piglets playing with a fully grown tiger. Sriracha Zoo in Chonburi, is Thailand's most successful tiger-breeding zoo largely due to the discovery that tiger cubs nursed by pigs grew up calm, un-aggressive and more suited to life in captivity. Now all of the zoo's 300 bengali tigers are raised this way.

Melvin the miracle kitten

Sender-inner Ronette R. writes; Attached are some pictures of Melvin, my Miracle teacup Himalayan. Yes, I said teacup. He has a form of dwarfism that will cause him to never exceed 3 pounds.
He has a super long story about how he came to us as an "accident" off of Craigslist here.
Breeding cats this small is not something that should be done because of all the health problems it can cause.
Melvin was very sick when we got him, but with some time, love, and attention, he got better. A lot better. He's still small, but very rambunctious.
