Iny tiny meerkat pups at the Taronga Zoo

Taronga Zoo is celebrating the birth of two Meerkat pups, the first to be born at the Zoo in nine years. The two pups, named Zanzibar and Nairobi, were born on Friday January 23 2009 to mother Malawi and have just started venturing out of their nest box to explore the Zoos African-themed Meerkat Desert.

This abandoned baby badger was found just in time before she to death. Snowdrop, as caretakers nicknamed her, is now being cared for at the Secret World Wildlife Centre in Somerset, England.

Koala saved from Australian bushfire

This gorgeous koala was rescued in a burned-out forest, about 90 miles east from Melbourne. Firefighter David Tree was in the middle of backburning at Mirboo North when he saw the stricken koala.

"I could see she had sore feet and was in trouble, so I pulled over the fire truck. She just plonked herself down, as if to say 'I'm beat'," he said.

"I offered her a drink and she drank three bottles.

"The most amazing part was when she grabbed my hand. I will never forget that."

The koala, named Sam by caretakers, was put on an IV drip and is on antibiotics and pain relief treatment.

Carer Jenny Shaw said Sam suffered burns on her paws and was in a lot of pain, but was on the road to recovery.

New baby giraffe at the Houston Zoo

The Houston Zoo has welcomed a new baby giraffe and as you can see he is very mediagenic. It is a Masai giraffe, that is being hand reared by keepers because his mother doesn't produce enough milk.

Otter rescued by postman

The BBC is reporting about a Scottish postman that saved a 6-week-old otter from the roadside and took her on a 220-mile tour in his postbag.

From the BBC News - Scotland

Postman Kenny Wilson:"She was frozen and I did not give her much of a chance to be honest.
"It looked as if she had either been abandoned or her mother had been hit by a car."
Mr Wilson said the otter had come from the nearby Gala Water and "looked terrified from the noise of the cars and would soon have been hit".
"I popped her into the mailbag I had in the car and carried on up the A7 and just kept hearing little squeaks and sucking noises to imply she was hungry," he said.
"I stopped at Tesco at Dalkeith and bought some kitten milk and fed it through the tube of a ballpoint pen.
"She seemed happy enough and during our journey she kept crawling up my neck looking for more warmth."
